Jet City Comic Show

I've been announced as a guest for the Jet City Comic Show in Seattle on Sept. 25th! More info at their site!

STORM

Here's my take on the fantastic Dave Cockrum designed Storm costume. Really wish she was still wearing this one...

Oh, and apparently I've done dry-brush tests on the sketches on two out of two sketches that I've posted here. Check back tomorrow to see if I can pull a hat trick :)

Iron Man

Been reading Essential Iron Man Vol. 1 and wanted to take a crack at his old costume. Don Heck is a friggin' genius - this is such an awesome costume!

Edit: I've been schooled by comics legend Phil Hester that this costume was in fact designed by Steve Ditko. Still, Don Heck is a genius and this is an awesome costume! :)

THE QUESTION

I initially had a not-so-subtle question mark shape in the background here but, to be honest, it looked really forced... So with the skill of a tattoo artist attempting to cover up somebody's drunken mistake I went about drawing s'more buildings 'n' such to fill in the gaps.
You can probably still see little hints of where it initially was though.

Thanks for lookin'!

Batman & Batgirl

A Twitter suggestion from last night, this one came from the talented Ted Naifeh.

Thor: The Mighty Avenger - Double Rainbow

News came out from Marvel today that Thor: TMA #1 & #2 have sold out at Diamond, so Marvel is re-printing those two issues together as Thor: The Mighty Avenger - Double Rainbow. If you missed the boat on the first two issues, this is the perfect way to pick them up! It's only $3.99 and will be out Sept. 22nd. Previews says this needs to be ordered at your local shop by THIS THURSDAY (AUG. 26th). Order code is JUL108106.

My editor asked me to put a new cover together for this collection. I was aiming for something iconic that conveyed the tone of the book. Below is the process.

First a couple pages of very loose sketches.

Then I like to turn the ideas in my sketches into several distinct options for my editor to choose from. In this case none of my options were really singing - so I combined a few ideas for a final rough to show editorial.
This was the final rough idea I sent and was approved, very enthusiastically!
Pencils stage.
Inks.
And then Matt Wilson did his color magic to it!

Again, thank you to everyone who has been picking the book up! I hope you're enjoying reading it as much as I'm enjoying drawing it!

Power Girl!

As you can see, I tend to draw Power Girl a tad less "endowed" than most artists. I enjoy drawing her, but I just can't bring myself to draw those giant cans. ;)

Daredevil

Not sure what inspired me to draw Daredevil this morning. Always one of my favorite characters to draw, though.

Haven't drawn this guy in a while. Thanks for lookin'!

Wasp & Ant-Man

If you picked up Thor: TMA #3 this week, these two might look familiar. I fell in love with Wasp and Ant-Man while drawing this issue and I hope this isn't the last I get to do with them in this incarnation. Below are my initial design sketches for these two lovebirds.

There is a very 60's /Emma Peel influence for my design of Janet. The non-costume outfit she wears in the book is derived from my first attempt at her costume (on the left).
The sketches above were my last failed attempt (all other attempts went out with the recycling) for Ant-Man. After looking at it, I decided this costume was a bit too complex. I really wanted both Hank and Janet to have very retro, simple and sleek costumes.
This is the design sheet I actually sent to Roger and Nate. At this point, all I had seen for the book was an outline. Once I got the script, these designs no longer felt appropriate for the story. So I put him in a modified version of his 60's costume, trying to play up the sci-fi feel to it.

Hope you guys are enjoying my take on some of these classic Marvel characters. And a big THANK YOU again to everyone who has been supporting the book by buying it, tweeting about it and talking it up on blogs, forums & podcasts. I appreciate it so much!

Fantastic Four

Mike Wieringo passed away three years ago today. Sadly, I never met Mike, but his work is a huge inspiration to me. As much as I love Tellos, when I think of Mike, I think of his amazing work on the Fantastic Four, hence today's sketch.

Thor Sketches

These head sketches were the runner-up prizes from the Thor: The Mighty Avenger #1 contest I held. I let the winners pick what Thor character they wanted.

THANK YOU again to everyone who has been picking the book up, and especially those of you who have taken the time to tell me how much you're enjoying it.

Don't forget #3 is out today! CBR has a preview, if you want to take a look! And while you're at it, go read this lovely article on NPR about Thor: TMA!

Mister Miracle

Another Twitter suggestion. I have such a soft spot for Kirby characters.

Damian Wayne: Robin

Here's my best shot at the Frank Quitely designed costume for that little jerk Damian.

Superman & Lois

I heard the news yesterday that Tom Mankiewicz, perhaps best known for his work on the Superman script, passed away. Superman is, in my opinion, the best movie ever made - so I thought I would do a small tribute to that on the blog today.

This is my version of the "You've got me? Who's got you?!" moment - one of my favorites in the movie. Do you have a favorite moment from Superman the movie?

Thor: The Mighty Avenger #6 Cover

My editor on Thor: TMA, Nate Cosby, posted the cover to #6 on Twitter today, so I thought I would share it here as well.

Matt Wilson is just killing it on colors!
