'nother Q&C Commission/pencils?

'nother Q&C commission

Here's a few sketches working out one of this week's commissions. The one at top is what ended up being the basis for the final piece. I'll post the rest of the steps throughout the week.

A Commish and a Dish

Here's a few Pitt brush pen sketches to close out the week. The grey tone gives 'em a bit of class they were lacking in just plain ol' black & white, I think. That's Jim Gordon on top, by the way.

Big Grey Hulk

Just looking at how loose and open lined this is I think I drew it after reading an issue of Frank Espinosa's Rocketo. The first time I saw Espinosa's work I was absolutely dumbstruck and I felt I must be in the wrong business. I immediately thought "this is the future of comics". If you haven't read Rocketo, go pick it up. Seriously, it's just beautiful. And if you have, YOU know what I'm talkin' about!

Indie or Mainstream?

Hey folks here's a few more pages of sketchbookyness. The top one is Jim Rugg and Brian Maruca's Street Angel and if I have to tell you who the bottom drawing is of you're reading the wrong blog. I think I did this drawing of our pal Kal-El after reading Lex Luthor: Man of Steel. See ya tomorrow, everybody.

Sure it's shameless but here's a couple of trades coming out that I've got a little bit of work in. I get a kick out of having my stuff in something I can sit on a book shelf so this is pretty cool news for me that DC's getting these trades out so fast.

Coupla Weird Doodles

I think the title says it all.
Have a nice weekend, everybody!

What Evil Lurks...

Here's a really stylized Shadow doodle from a couple years back. The actual art for this looks absolutely awful. Since I was finishing off like 3 markers on this sketch it's all faded and is in at least three different colors. The Prismacolor and the Pitt pen blacks still look like I just put them on yesterday, but the felt tip stuff looks all faded and pitiful. Never trust a Sharpie on your comic art! Sure it might get it done, but don't expect it to look anything like you want in a couple years. Just a word of warning:)
See ya tomorrow, everybody!

HB's 10th B-Day

Here's the pencils to a Hellboy pinup I did for the 10th anniversary of Mike Mignola's baby for the San Diego Comic-Con souvenir book a couple of years ago. I sent in this one and a really cartoony pinup...the cartoony one eventually saw print. I still think this one turned out okay though.

A Cool Exec with a Heart of Steel

Here's a drawing of ol' Shell Head inspired by an issue in which Tony's rocket boots failed and he had to make a landing just with his repulsars. I think it might have been drawn by Tuska but sinceI don't have that comic anymore can somebody tell me what issue this might have occured in and who handled art chores. It's really starting to bug me now that I think about it. Thanks folks!

I think I've got a colored version of this packed away somewhere. If I happen across it I'll post it here. See ya tomorrow, kids!

Sketchbook Doodles

Alright, so I finally hunkered down and went through some more of my old sketchbooks and spent some time scanning in a bunch of pages this morning so I can get back into this daily(well, maybe every other day or so, we'll see how it goes) blog thing the kids like so much.
Keep checkin' back, there's a bunch of cool stuff I'll have posted in the next few weeks. See ya next time!

Hey folks, sorry I haven't posted in a while been keepin' pretty busy 'round these parts. Anyhoo this here is a piece from last year, that Ande Parks was nice enough to ink, that was auctioned for A.C.T.O.R. what's now the HERO initiative.

Self Portrait

Hi Folks! This is Chris's wife, Laura. Chris hasn't had much time to post lately since he's been working so hard so I thought I would add one for him. I found this little gem on Chris's table this morning. It's a self portrait he drew late one night this week. Large hand = pain. Poor guy . . .

MO-KAN

So a while back Laura and I made it out to Kansas City for the Mo-Kan Comics Conspiracy show where we got a chance to hang out with a bunch of great creators and super-cool fans. It was a total blast! Easily one of the most fun cons I've had the pleasure of being behind the table at, and it's all thanks to the great creators who made it out like Ed Brubaker, B. Clay Moore, Andy Kuhn, Matt Fraction, Kelly Sue DeConnick, Phil Hester, Ande Parks, Brook Turner, Tony Moore, Cullen Bunn, and Brian Hurtt (who all made me feel like one of the cool kids) and all the fine comic fans who took the time to come by the table and chat with me a bit or pick up a sketch or a comic.

So here's a few sketches I did while at the show that some folks were nice enough to scan in for me. If anyone else has a scan of one of my doodles handy drop me a line and I'll stick it up here on the blog and I'll email you a no-prize. Thanks everybody! Oh, and a special thanks to Greg and Cho for havin' us out. Cheers!

Beast of Halloween

What says Happy Halloween better than some guy covered in blue fur?! Have fun trick-or-treating, kids.

This One is Rad...Norrin Radd

Geez, this was a pain to color! Now I know why he's the Silver Surfer and not the Chrome Surfer.

Wednesday, October 25, 2006

Daredevil!

I usually stay away from color, but I was on a roll the other night so here's another marker sketch. This time it's of everyone's favorite blind superhero(I think he's the only one, but I may be wrong) DAREDEVIL!

Tuesday, October 24, 2006

The Everlovin' Blue Eyed THING!

Here's a doodle of the FF's own Ben Grimm. This is my closest approximation to how Kirby did him back in the day. Again, this one was done with my handy dandy Prismacolor markers on some printer paper I had sitting next to my desk. See ya next time!

Monday, October 23, 2006

HULK, SKETCH!!

Here's another color marker doodle. I just wish I could get this loose with my regular comics work. Have a good one, everybody!

Color Sketch... and few plugs

Here's a color piece to spice things up a bit...Wait, did I post this before? Anyway, if I haven't it's one of a bunch of sketches I drew in a fury after reading the manuscript to a kids book that Cullen Bunn wrote a while back. I know I keep singing praises for Cullen on my blog but I really think he's just a fantastic writer, and I just hope I get a chance to work with him before he gets too cool to talk to me. You're not reading this are you, CB?

Oh, and if you're heading out to a comic shop soon be sure to pick up Cullen and Brian's the Damned, which hits stands today along with my latest ish of Queen & Country, both from the fine folks at Oni Press. Have a nice one, everybody!

Doodles

Just another page of assorted sketches today, folks. These were actually some early character designs for characters that appeared in the Exterminators issue I drew a while back. If you haven't read Exterminators yet you're missing out! It's easily one of the best comics on the shelves these days, with moments that stick in your head for months after put the book down. So go pick up the trade already!! With a sticker price of $9.99 it's a bargain at twice the price!! Go! NOW!!

Monday, October 16, 2006

MAN-THING!!

Here's a sketch of Man-Thing I did a while back for my pal Cullen Bunn. Cullen's book the Damned is hitting shelves on Oct. 18th from Oni Press so be sure to go pick it up. I can't recommend it nearly enough. The Damned is gonna be HUGE, so get in on the ground floor, kids.

Old School - day 4

Because nobody demanded it, here's day four of old sketchbook junk, this time with Conan and Robin. There's a team-up I'd like to see in a comic!

Old School-day 3

Since neither of these were good enough for their own post I figured together they might be equivalent to a decent, normal post. I'll have more new goodies soon though.

Another Q&C Commission-Inks!

Here are the inks to the commission I worked up for one Mr Chris Neseman, who's one of the hosts of Around Comics. Check out part one of their Greg Rucka episode up today or if you can bear listening to me ramble on check out part two, with a mini interview with me, up on Thursday. It was a lot of fun, but pretty nerve wracking, especially for a kid who flunked public speaking. Thanks guys!
