I made a Thing!

The Thing and unfinished Dr. Doom
An unfinished Adam Kamen from Area 10 and Paul Crocker from Queen & Country

I posted these to my Twitter earlier, but thought I'd stick them up here too. Way back when I used to have this thing called "free time" I would sculpt from time to time. Here are a few I found when cleaning out my old studio space.

JOKER (D)

As we continue on with the Alphabet sketches I wanted to take a crack at a slightly different approach to the Joker than my usual take. The gap toothed grin is a nod to Mike Hawthorne's interpretation:)

TORCH (C)

I suppose this could easily be the Fantastic Four's Human Torch instead of the Golden Age Human Torch, who is now referred to simply as The Torch, but I like to think that a flaming robot from the old days would have a messier looking flame than the organic one that Johnny Storm puts off. *cough* nerd *cough*
Oh, and the 'c' composition is a bit more on the nose with this one since a few folks said they had a hard time making out the letter composition on the last couple days. :)

Here's the second of my alphabet composition sketches.
Can you see it? Do ya see the "B"?!! No? Ah, frag it.
Better luck next time ya bastiches.

BlACK CAT & SPIDEY (A)

From time to time in the coming months, since some of my compositions here have gotten a bit stale of late, I'll be taking a cue from Sean Murphy and using the letters of the alphabet to help define positioning of whatever characters I decide to tackle on some upcoming sketches.
Sound good? Okay!!

Also, after a bit of Googling to make sure I was drawing Felicia's old costume correctly, I realized that there a LOT of really inappropriate interpretations of the character online. I mean, in the above sketch she's being a bit of a tease but yeesh!
Keep your safe search ON, kids.

'nother suggestion taken from the folks that follow me on Twitter.
This go 'round Kalibak here was suggested by the amazingly talented, and fellow Comic Twart contributor, Ron Salas.

I just posted my Dan Dare sketch over on the Comic Twart blog. You can check it out here.

And since I managed to stretch my legs a bit by taking a walk over to the scanner before slinging any ink, above are the pencils.

Serenity!!!

Last week, one of my new projects was announced by actor Ron Glass! If you haven't heard, I'll be the artist on the upcoming Serenity: The Shepherd's Tale graphic novel, published by Dark Horse Comics, written by Joss Whedon & Zack Whedon, with colors by Dave Stewart! You can see the above image with Dave Stewart's amazing colors, as well as read an interview with me and Dark Horse Editor Scott Allie, over at CBR!

Below are early sketches for the book, as I was trying to get a handle on drawing these great characters! Hope you enjoy!

The Bad News . . . All At Once

Bit of bad news to pass along. Unfortunately, due to my workload, I've had to cancel my trip to Seattle for Emerald City Comic Con this weekend. My apologies to anyone who was planning on stopping by my table. Laura and I were both really looking forward to this con and we're sad we had to cancel. Hope you guys understand.

While we're at it, I'll announce the rest of the my bad news.

A few weeks back, I tweeted about the solicit for Atlas, written by Jeff Parker with art by Gabriel Hardman and back-ups by me. Unfortunately, I will not be doing backups for at least the first arc of this series. As much as we all wanted this to happen, we didn't realize that there would be a scheduling conflict with a different upcoming project I have.

Despite the fact that I would like to draw ALL the comic books, I really can't. While I'm bummed that I won't be working with the extremely talented team on Atlas, the project I will be working on in it's place is something I can't wait to tell you about. I am beyond excited about this new project, and I think you guys will be too. Hopefully the cat will be out of the bag in about a month, but until then it's all off the record, on the QT and very hush-hush.

P.S. Sorry for the lack of art up here lately, working to get some up soon!

Area 10 Contest!

Win it before you can buy it! I have two advance copies of my Vertigo Crime graphic novel Area 10 that I would like to give away, so we're having a contest! There are TWO ways to enter:

1) Leave a comment on this post between now and Wednesday, March 10th at 12 p.m. (central time) telling me a book you'd like to see me draw. Winner will be chosen by random number generator and posted on Wednesday, March 10th! One entry per person please!

2) Follow me on Twitter! I'll randomly pick one Twitter follower on Wednesday, March 10th to win a copy of the book!

This is not the final hardcover edition that will be available for sale on April 13th - this is a special advance readers copy that usually only goes to book reviewers! Good luck!

Detective Chimp and the Case of the bipedal gorilla

Sorry sketches have been a bit scattered out lately. I'm crazy-swamped with work at the moment but will do my best to still post sketches here a couple times each week.

I appreciate your patience while I get caught up. As a thank you for hanging in there I give you a sketch of a chimp in people clothes and a super-smart Gorilla.

Oh, and be sure to check out my latest sketch over on the Comic Twart Blog of Jordi Bernet's Clara De Noche. She's not nekkid, but I don't know that I'd check it out at work! ;)
