Spidey, Gwen & Green Goblin

Jeez, I'm terrible at coming up with titles for blog posts lately. :/

Anyhoo, Spidey and Gwen... uh... yeah, I guess I'm not that great and coming up for text to accompany the art either. Hope you like it?

Here's the pencils for the above piece.

Oh, and I just posted my Plastic Man sketch on the ComicTwart blog HERE.

Thor & Cap FCBD!!!

Yesterday, the silver books for Free Comic Book Day 2011 were announced. Among them is a new Thor: The Mighty Avenger & Cap story, written by Roger Langridge, drawn by me, and colored by Matt Wilson! Thought I'd go ahead and post the cover process. Hope you enjoy!

This FCBD issue has been in the works for a long time, way before it was announced that the series would be ending at issue 8. I hope it serves as a nice little coda for our run. (The first trade of which is available now, the second trade will be out in March.)

For the cover, I was asked to come up with an "iconic" type shot of Thor and Cap. The first two thumbnails were the choices I gave for that.

The third thumbnail was an extra option I sent along, for a cover with a little more personality. ;)

The powers that be ultimately chose thumbnail 2, which I still had a lot of fun with. Here are pencils.

And inks.

And Matt Wilson's beautiful colors!

Hope you get a chance to pick it up at your favorite comic shop in May!

EDIT: A lot of folks have commented on the great design of Cap in this cover. Just wanted to clarify that this Cap design was by Gurihiru for the upcoming Captain America: The Fighting Avenger with writer Brian Clevinger.

Batman Video!

I've been meaning to do another video for a while now, but well, I've been kinda busy. ;) Sorry for yet another Batman drawing, but I wanted to do something fun and brushy. Once again, this video is sped up. Didn't figure anyone really wanted to watch me draw for 27 minutes. :) Finished drawing is below. Hope you enjoy!

P.S. Just a reminder that my Wonder Woman Day piece is still up for auction on ebay to benefit domestic violence programs and shelters!

Thor: The Mighty Avenger #8 Cover Process

Another cover process for your viewing pleasure. Sorry if these are getting redundant!

Then I took a rare step of rendering my pencils, halfway through inking the cover. It was both for my benefit (so I could figure out what still needed black) and my colorist Matt's benefit (since Tony's costume has so many different planes on it).

Thor: The Mighty Avenger - Double Rainbow

News came out from Marvel today that Thor: TMA #1 & #2 have sold out at Diamond, so Marvel is re-printing those two issues together as Thor: The Mighty Avenger - Double Rainbow. If you missed the boat on the first two issues, this is the perfect way to pick them up! It's only $3.99 and will be out Sept. 22nd. Previews says this needs to be ordered at your local shop by THIS THURSDAY (AUG. 26th). Order code is JUL108106.

My editor asked me to put a new cover together for this collection. I was aiming for something iconic that conveyed the tone of the book. Below is the process.

First a couple pages of very loose sketches.

Then I like to turn the ideas in my sketches into several distinct options for my editor to choose from. In this case none of my options were really singing - so I combined a few ideas for a final rough to show editorial.
This was the final rough idea I sent and was approved, very enthusiastically!
Pencils stage.
Inks.
And then Matt Wilson did his color magic to it!

Again, thank you to everyone who has been picking the book up! I hope you're enjoying reading it as much as I'm enjoying drawing it!

TORPEDO sketches and pencils

These sketches were originally done in an attempt to figure out what the cover of my next sketchbook would be. None of these made it through to the end but the bridge scene had such a Torpedo-ish vibe I couldn't help but use it for my Torpedo sketch that can be seen over on the ComicTwart blog.
Besides, it's good to recycle, right?

And here are the pencils for the sketch. Really loose so I can still have fun and draw the rest in ink.

Marvel Adventures Super Heroes #20 (anatomy of a cover)

Marvel Adventures Super Heroes #20, which I posted the solicitation info about yesterday, will be my first cover work work for Marvel Comics, and hopefully not my last, so I thought I'd post a bit of the process that went in to making it today.

Here is the first pass at a rough layout. My Editor Nate Cosby had asked for a shot of the Vision tearing a car in half. Sounds easy enough, right?

After it was decided that neither of the first two thumbnails were working I took another shot and came up with these two.

I guess you can tell which one we went with because below are my finished pencils. These are considerably tighter than I generally prefer to work since I wanted this to be JUST right. I even went out and took a bunch of reference photos of my car since I wanted to, though it may not all be 100% correct, make the car parts as believable as possible in each stage.
And here are the finished inks.

I was a little worried, after taking a step back from the finished piece for a bit, that the Vision's cape could easily be mistaken for the car door, not to mention the amount of confusion that could be caused by the number of times I made the decision to leave lines open, so I worked up this quick little color comp.
Obviously it's crudely simple but it's main purpose was to help separate objects on the page.

All this piece needed now was some killer color work by Veronica Gandini, which you can see at the top of this post, and the final logo and design work.
I was afraid I may had gone a bit overboard on the dramatic lighting here. Vero really made it all work though by using bold colors to help sell the moment, without making it too creepy.

All said, I'm pretty dang happy with how it turned out. And it was a ton of fun to work on to boot!! Be sure to pick up a copy when it hits stands on February 10th. The issue is written by
Paul Tobin after all, so I'm sure it'll be a hoot.
