Thor and the Warriors Three
I just got my comp copies of the new, FULL SIZE Thor: The Mighty Avenger
trade that will be out next month and was inspired to revisit these guys. I've probably said this a million times by now, but I am most proud of my work on Thor: The Mighty Avenger. It was truly something special to work on.
If you are new to my work, or only know me through Daredevil or Captain America or these blog sketches, I hope you'll pick this trade up. It is FULL SIZE (not digest size) and has all eight issues, plus the Free Comic Book Day issue and other back matter like character designs and covers included.

Thor: TMA page up for sale!

(click to embiggen)
Many of you know that I don't sell original published pages. Yesterday I put an unpublished page from Thor: TMA #3 up for auction on Ebay, so I thought I would put up a short post about the page and why it wasn't published.
I often self-reject pages after they're pencilled because they end up not working for one reason or another. In this case, I inked one panel then realized I hadn't left enough room for word balloons in many of the panels, so I shrunk down much of the page in photoshop and lightboxed it in ink onto another piece of bristol. So these are the original pencils.
If you are interested in owning the unpublished version of this page, the auction goes until Sunday night. Thanks for lookin'!

Thor TMA!
I thought with the THOR movie coming out this week, as well as the FCBD book Captain America and Thor: The Mighty Fighting Avengers (by the THOR: TMA team) , it would be a good time to revisit our gone, but not forgotten pal, Thor: The Mighty Avenger.Won't you join me in pouring one out for our lost homie?
P.S. For those who missed it, I posted earlier about having to cancel my appearance at HeroesCon next month.

Thor & Cap FCBD!!!
Yesterday, the silver books for Free Comic Book Day 2011 were announced. Among them is a new Thor: The Mighty Avenger & Cap story, written by Roger Langridge, drawn by me, and colored by Matt Wilson! Thought I'd go ahead and post the cover process. Hope you enjoy!

The third thumbnail was an extra option I sent along, for a cover with a little more personality. ;)

This FCBD issue has been in the works for a long time, way before it was announced that the series would be ending at issue 8. I hope it serves as a nice little coda for our run. (The first trade of which is available now
, the second trade will be out in March
.)
For the cover, I was asked to come up with an "iconic" type shot of Thor and Cap. The first two thumbnails were the choices I gave for that.
The powers that be ultimately chose thumbnail 2, which I still had a lot of fun with. Here are pencils.
And inks.
EDIT: A lot of folks have commented on the great design of Cap in this cover. Just wanted to clarify that this Cap design was by Gurihiru for the upcoming Captain America: The Fighting Avenger with writer Brian Clevinger.

Saving Thor: TMA!

Thank you all so much for the outpouring of support for Thor: TMA since Tuesday! It's been really overwhelming!
For those of you that asked, the best way to show your support for the book, in the hopes that it will return, is to continue to buy it! Issue #6 is out next week. Issues #7 & #8 will be out in December and January. You can pre-order the first trade (out in December)
and the second trade (out in March)
on Amazon or at your local comic shop.
There is also a great interview with Roger over at iFanboy along with preview art for #6, if you want to go take a look.
Additionally, I'll mention that people are using #SaveThorTheMightyAvenger on Twitter and a Facebook page has been started.
And in the spirit of Thor: TMA, I hope you'll make any online interactions about the book with Marvel(including their editors and creators) as positive as you can. Thanks again for the amazing support! :)

Sad News
The cat is out of the bag that Thor: TMA will be ending at issue 8, for now.
Thank you all so much for all the kind words and amazing support you gave this book. Thor: TMA has meant the world to me and I'm so thankful I had the opportunity to work on it with the amazing team of Roger Langridge, Matt Wilson, Rus Wooton, Nate Cosby and Mike Horwitz.
We've still got three more awesome issues that will be out, I hope you continue to support the book. And feel free to let Marvel know that you'd like to see it come back! :)

Thor: The Mighty Avenger #8 Cover Process
Another cover process for your viewing pleasure. Sorry if these are getting redundant!

Then I took a rare step of rendering my pencils, halfway through inking the cover. It was both for my benefit (so I could figure out what still needed black) and my colorist Matt's benefit (since Tony's costume has so many different planes on it).

Thor: The Mighty Avenger - Double Rainbow
News came out from Marvel today that Thor: TMA #1 & #2 have sold out at Diamond, so Marvel is re-printing those two issues together as Thor: The Mighty Avenger - Double Rainbow. If you missed the boat on the first two issues, this is the perfect way to pick them up! It's only $3.99 and will be out Sept. 22nd. Previews says this needs to be ordered at your local shop by THIS THURSDAY (AUG. 26th). Order code is JUL108106.

Again, thank you to everyone who has been picking the book up! I hope you're enjoying reading it as much as I'm enjoying drawing it!
My editor asked me to put a new cover together for this collection. I was aiming for something iconic that conveyed the tone of the book. Below is the process.

First a couple pages of very loose sketches.

Then I like to turn the ideas in my sketches into several distinct options for my editor to choose from. In this case none of my options were really singing - so I combined a few ideas for a final rough to show editorial.

This was the final rough idea I sent and was approved, very enthusiastically!

Pencils stage.

Inks.

And then Matt Wilson did his color magic to it!

Wasp & Ant-Man
If you picked up Thor: TMA #3 this week, these two might look familiar. I fell in love with Wasp and Ant-Man while drawing this issue and I hope this isn't the last I get to do with them in this incarnation. Below are my initial design sketches for these two lovebirds.
There is a very 60's /Emma Peel influence for my design of Janet. The non-costume outfit she wears in the book is derived from my first attempt at her costume (on the left).

The sketches above were my last failed attempt (all other attempts went out with the recycling) for Ant-Man. After looking at it, I decided this costume was a bit too complex. I really wanted both Hank and Janet to have very retro, simple and sleek costumes.
This is the design sheet I actually sent to Roger and Nate. At this point, all I had seen for the book was an outline. Once I got the script, these designs no longer felt appropriate for the story. So I put him in a modified version of his 60's costume, trying to play up the sci-fi feel to it.Hope you guys are enjoying my take on some of these classic Marvel characters. And a big THANK YOU again to everyone who has been supporting the book by buying it, tweeting about it and talking it up on blogs, forums & podcasts. I appreciate it so much!

Thor Sketches
These head sketches were the runner-up prizes from the Thor: The Mighty Avenger #1 contest I held. I let the winners pick what Thor character they wanted.
THANK YOU again to everyone who has been picking the book up, and especially those of you who have taken the time to tell me how much you're enjoying it.
Don't forget #3 is out today! CBR has a preview, if you want to take a look! And while you're at it, go read this lovely article on NPR about Thor: TMA!
