Hurley Con: Drax
I'm not terribly familiar with most of the cosmic Marvel stuff but I did my best with Drax the Destroyer here anyway.
Thanks again, Luke.

Hurley Con: Daredevil & Black Widow
I had no idea what I was going to do when I put pencil to paper on this one, other than the characters in it, but things all just sort of fell into place here. Big thanks again to Matt West for giving so many of my Daredevil sketches a place to call home.
Also, I'll be attending Planet Comicon this weekend, so if you're in the KC area please stop by my table for some funnybooks, sketches and some nerdy chitchat.

Hurley Con: Brock vs Mol
I had way more fun doing this than anybody should have doing what they do for a living.
Venture Bros is one of my most favorite things to have playing in the background while I work (season 3 will be on constant rotation for the next few weeks:) and I just love getting the chance to draw some of the characters in that world.
Thanks again, Doc!

Hurley Con: Marquis
This was another pre-ordered sketch. I'd never actually tried to draw Guy Davis's Marquis before so after my first attempt (the top one), of which I wasn't particularly proud of, I took another stab at it (the bottom). I think the second attempt definitely helped get a few kinks out.
I ended up bringing both to the show and letting the gent who commissioned it pick which of the two he preferred. He even picked the one I preferred! Goodonya, Doug:)

Hurley Con: Daredevil vs Bullseye
This sketch was also done before the show, but sadly was forgotten in my sketch book. It's since found a happy home with one Matt West.

Mighty Big News!
I'm so excited that I can finally share with you what I've been working on!
Starting with issue #5 I'll be taking over art chores from the amazingly talented Peter Snejbjerg on DC comics the Mighty, written by Peter Tomasi and Keith Champagne.
If you aren't already picking up this book you are seriously missing out.
I'm a huge fan of the book and am really excited to get to be a part of it.
I hope you all enjoy my work on the book as much as I've enjoyed working on it.
THE MIGHTY #5
Written by Peter J. Tomasi & Keith Champagne
Art by Chris Samnee
Cover by Dave Johnson
After last issue’s shocking finale, Gabriel Cole finds himself faced with a terrifying new threat. And it’s the only menace on Earth that his ally Alpha One can’t help him vanquish! Writers Tomasi and Champagne welcome the stunning art of new series regular Chris Samnee (CHECKMATE) as the saga of THE MIGHTY reveals its true shape!

Hurley Con: Bats vs Deathstroke
This is the first of a few sketches I did before Hurley Con. I'll be posting sketches from the show throughout this week, and most likely a bit into next.
With this one I even managed to get a scan of the pencils as well.
Thanks again, Brian!

Things You Need Thursday: Golden Age Sandman
I was asked to do a commission of the Golden Age Sandman a while back, but I wanted to make sure I could handle the character before I decided whether or not to take it on. I just tried to imagine Alex Toth's the Fox, and everything sort of fell in to place.
We ended up going with a different subject for the final commission but I had a lot of fun with this sketch though.
By the way, the latest Sandman: Mystery Theatre just came out a few weeks back. You picked it up already though, right? Right?!

Planet Comicon Sketch List
I'll be attending Planet Comicon in Overland Park, Kansas on March 28th and 29th and am accepting pre-orders for con sketches.
My con sketch prices for 2009 are:
$50 for a single character in B&W on 9 x 12 bristol
$75 for two characters (on 1 page) in B&W on 9 x 12 bristol
All sketches will be personalized, no exceptions. If you'd prefer something drawn in your sketchbook I can put your name on the list, but this list is primarily for sketches that I can get done before the show.
If you know you will be attending Planet Comicon and would like a sketch please drop me a line, my email address in my profile.
If able I will try to have your sketch done before the show, otherwise each sketch will be drawn at the show in the order I receive your emails.
I will most likely only be taking on about 10 sketches each day of the show so I can make each one as good as possible. Hopefully getting on the list will ensure that anyone who'd like a sketch can get one, and this way there's less wait for all you nice folks.
If this is out of your budget I will have blog sketches and comics available starting $5.

Whatever Wednesday:Cap & Bucky Commission
Here are the thumbnail sketches for another one of the commissions I took on back in December.
These pencils ended up being a little tighter than I had planned, since I wanted to make sure everything was true to the period, but still loose enough to have a fun time inking.
Speaking of inks, here's the finished piece.
Thanks again, Chris!

Post #600 or "The One With All the Consolation Sketches"
To celebrate my 600th post here are all the sketches that I mailed out to the fine folks that entered suggestions for the Name a Theme Week Contest I had a while back.
Well, sort of. I think there are a couple guys I never got addresses from... so yeah, those weren't mailed but you get the idea, right?

(my) Gal Friday: Lulu
I sketched this really quickly on the back of one of my comic pages the other night while Laura was just cracking open a new book to start reading.
I had to sketch it quick, and forgo running to my office for a fresh sheet of paper, because I wanted to be able to capture the wonderful almost posed look she was rockin' and didn't want her to be conscious of the fact that I was sketching her. She just looked so beautiful and smart that I had to try to get just a bit of that down on paper.
I don't think I pulled off half of what I saw though. I definitely need to do a bit more life drawing nowadays. I'm starting to think I've got more than a few muscles that aren't being stretched much of late.
Have a great weekend, folks. Be sure to check back on Monday for something a little different, yeah?

Whatever Wednesday: Tom vs the Flash
Tom Katers had a contest a while back to design a logo for his podcast Tom Vs the Flash, so above is my (non-winning) entry.
I'm not lucky enough to have my logo grace the site, or your ipod screens, but it's still a really good show that takes a funny spin on summarizing silver-age comics.
Go take a listen!

Super Tuesday: Wolverine
Is anyone else out there ready for the long awaited return of Logan's brown costume? I mean the yellow and blue is fine I guess, but does anyone actually prefer it?
Hm.. it appears that Wolverine's son(?!) Daken is now wearing this costume. Huh. There you have it. Never mind. As you were.

Bat-Monday: Black Mask, Clayface and a Marker Test
This started out as just a sheet of paper to test out which of my markers had seen better days... and ended up as this crazy thing.
And here's a shot of Black Mask and Clayface just standin' around.
Also, I just wanted to say a big thanks to all you who made it out to Hurley Con over the weekend. You folks are swell.
I'll post some of the sketches I finished prior to the show next week. In the meantime, if you had me do a sketch for you at the show I'd really appreciate it if you could send me a scan.
Thanks again, everbody. You're all my favorites:D

Gal Friday: Lady Black Panther
I'll be honest here, I don't know thing one about the new female Black Panther... but she sure cuts a mean silhouette!
Also, be sure to swing by Hurley Con while you're out tomorrow. If you're looking for me, I'll be the really tired looking guy behind a table with a neck-beard that looks like a bird's nest.
See ya there!

Technicolor Thursday: Firebreather
I'm knee deep in work right now but I did manage to squeeze in this pinup between pages the other night.
This guy'll be showing up in the trade paperback collection of Phil Hester and Andy Kuhn's excellent Firebreather.
Inks AND colors, baby! Well, a couple colors anyway.
Also, be sure to check out Andy's (now frequently updated) blog for an overdose of awesomeness.
