Let the Right One In

Laura and I hardly get the free time to just sit down and watch a movie, normally Laura is paying bills or doing schoolwork and I'm propping my lap desk up to do a bit of inking while we "watch" an episode of Futurama or 30 Rock, but we took a few hours out of our day to watch Let the Right One In recently and both really enjoyed it.

Anyway, this sketch was done early this morning, weeks after seeing the movie. I just pulled up the trailer on my iPod and drew from the tiny little paused screen.

And for anyone wondering why I hardly ever post pencils with these blog sketches, here are the pencils to this sketch.

Also, here's Aunt May as a werewolf.
You're welcome.

Special thanks to Paul Tobin for inspiring this strange little doodle :)

Have a great Halloween, kids!!

Five to Three

Hey, folks! No sketches to post here today, I'm afraid. Deadlines being what they are it was only a matter if time before I had to cut down on the number sketches I could post that aren't related to whatever books I'm working on. Plenty of sketching going on in the Samnee home, unfortunately it's all a bit too spoilery to share with you all just yet.
Anyway, this was bound to happen eventually but, for the foreseeable future I will only be posting here three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. I hope you'll all still keep checking back in. Don't be strangers, okay. I'll see you all on Friday!

The Anchor

I was planning on drawing lots of Halloween type ghouls and goblins, or maybe some classic Universal Monsters, this week but after reading Phil Hester and Brian Churilla's The Anchor the other day I just had to get their lead character of "Clem" down on paper first.

If you haven't picked up the debut issue of The Anchor yet you're missing out. It's everything I had hoped it would be and more.

I'm no word-smith, so I don't feel like I can do it justice by telling you about it... just do yourself a favor and go buy a copy, plop down in your favorite chair and get ready for a really fun reading experience.

Oh, and don't worry about putting on your socks, 'cause they'd just get blown off anyway:)

Green Goblin!

Green Goblin is easily my favorite super villain that carries a purse- Wait... I think the golden-age Catwoman may have carried a purse.
Well, in any case, Green Goblin is easily my favorite MALE super villain that carries a purse!

Also, don't forget to the enter the contest to win a sketch. It's only running through this Friday (Oct 23rd) and all you have to do is tell me a character or two that you'd like to own a sketch of. Simple enough, right?

Jonny Quest

A tweet from Evan "Doc" Shaner about dream gigs got me thinking yesterday. Besides the obvious dream projects I've had with me for years (Batman, Fantastic Four, Jimmy Olsen, etc.) some day, since I love the property more than anyone my age has a right to, I'd really like to take a shot at drawing a Jonny Quest comic.

Also, just another reminder that the contest to win a sketch from last week will run through this Friday (Oct 23rd) so be sure enter, okay?

Rocketeer

I had an idea of how I wanted this sketch to look, and thought I got relatively close by the time I finished, but apparently I was wrong.
Originally this was meant to be landscape format but after I scanned it into Photoshop, which automatically turned it vertically, it all just clicked waaayyy better.
Take that, brain! You've been outsmarted by software... and this time it wasn't just Lego Batman!!

Also, the contest to win a sketch that started last week will be running through this Friday (Oct 23rd) so be sure enter, okay?

Contest Time!

I've opened an Etsy shop to sell sketchbooks, prints, blog sketches & lunchnotes and I thought it would be fun to celebrate with a contest!

One lucky winner will receive a 9x12 original sketch (by me - natch) with 1-2 characters of their choosing!

All you need to do to enter is leave a comment on this post and tell me what you would like for your sketch if you win! Remember there is a two character max.

Contest runs until Friday, October 23rd at 11:59 p.m. (central). One entry per person for this contest (you may also enter my wife Laura's contest!). Winner will be picked by random number generator and will be announced Monday, October 26th! Good luck! (Please note: If you've previously won a contest on my blog, you are ineligible for this one - sorry!)

P.S. We're offering free shipping on orders placed in my shop through 1:00 pm central this Sunday, October 18th. Please enter "free shipping" in the notes to seller when you check out and I'll refund your shipping through Paypal. So order something, damnit! :)

Woodgod

Hey look! It's everyone's second favorite satyr comic character Woodgod. Second because Khordes is at the top of everybody's list, right? Right?! Sigh.

I took recommendations on my Twitter feed for sketch suggestions again over the weekend.
I'll be posting the first five of those suggestions here throughout the week.

X-Men vs Agents of Atlas: Day Five

This has been a lot of fun. I've still got quite a few sketches where these came from, what do you say we do it all again in about a month or so for the second issue?
Have a great weekend, folks! I'll see ya in the funnybooks!

X-Men vs Agents of Atlas: Day Four

Did you all pick up your copies of X-Men vs Agents of Atlas and The Mighty yesterday?
Here's a bit more of my preliminary work for the book as a thank you to all of you out there who managed to snag copies! You guys are the best!:D
To those who didn't: Avert your eyes from the sketch below until you've made your purchase! Thank you.

X-Men vs Agents of Atlas: Day Three (And the MIGHTY)

Out on stands today is issue #1 of X-Men vs Agents of Atlas, written by the the one-and-only Jeff Parker himself, illustrated by Carlo Pagulayan with 8 pages of classic action dutifully doodled by yours truly, all wrapped in two, count 'em TWO different covers to choose from. The regular edition is by Ed McGuinness

or if your tastes lean more toward the undead, there's the zombie variant by Gerald Parel

Veronica Gandini turned in a swell job on the colors for the issue, like the one you see here. This is my first page in the issue, sans dialogue.

and here's the black & white line art so that we can have something new up here today:)

The Mighty #9 is also on stands at your local comic shop today, with another beauty of a cover by Dave Johnson and, as should come as no surprise to those that have been following along, it's another scorcher of an issue by the writing team of Peter Tomasi and Keith Champagne!

X-Men vs Agents of Atlas: Day Two

Nothing says Tuesday like The Beast! Sigh. I'm a bit stumped for commentary here... you folks mostly just look at the doodles anyway. right?

X-Men vs Agents of Atlas: Day One

In anticipation of the first issue of X-Men vs Agents of Atlas hitting stands this Wednesday I figured I'd go ahead and post some of my preliminary sketches.
Hope you all dig this little peek behind the curtain, because I'll be posting this sort of thing throughout the rest of the week:)

Spidey!

Here's another Spidey sketch to end the week. He's obviously way older and bulkier here than he'll appear in the issue of Marvel Adventures Spider-Man I'm currently working on.
Paul Tobin's script has been a ton of fun to work from. I can't wait for you all to get a chance to read this:D

Cable

Here's a decidedly less 90's version of Cable than the last time I posted a sketch of him.
