Y'know, halfway through this thing I wasn't digging it. Sat it aside a while and came back to it after dinner. After splashing some more ink on it I'm actually pretty happy with it. Yay Batman!!

BULLOCK & BATS

I heard about the passing of Gene Colan late last night. It's really sad to think that another of the masters of comic art is no longer with us. All my best to his friends and family.

One of the first Batman comics I ever read as a kid was by Gene. Memory may be failing me now since that was so long ago, but I seem to remember Detective Harvey Bullock out at the docks in Gotham... and Batman being under water at some point. Although those two things may have been unrelated in the book I went ahead and mashed 'em up for today's tribute to Gene "the Dean".

Batman wasn't the only book that Gene drew, although it was the first thing I saw and went "Wow, what is THIS?!!!". Gene's amazing art graced the pages of Captain America, Daredevil, Night Force, Howard the Duck and scores of other outstanding work that has been a real inspiration to me over the years.

Thanks for everything, Gene. We miss you already.


Also, a group of artists all took our hand at inking a Dracula sketch that Gene had pencilled a while back. The inked pieces are each being auctioned on Ebay HERE. With new pieces popping up each week and all proceeds being given to the Hero Initiative. My piece should go up shortly, if you want to keep an eye out.
Big thanks to Ande Parks , whose piece is currently up for auction, for organizing the whole thing.

Since I'm down to just one book a month, and with Emerald City Comic Con this weekend, I figured now was as good a time as any to get myself back into the sketching groove.

This turned out a bit looser than I had initially planned but at least I'm working out those long dormant sketchin' muscles again. :)

I've been meaning to do another video for a while now, but well, I've been kinda busy. ;) Sorry for yet another Batman drawing, but I wanted to do something fun and brushy. Once again, this video is sped up. Didn't figure anyone really wanted to watch me draw for 27 minutes. :) Finished drawing is below. Hope you enjoy!

Is 2009 over already?!!

And here is my last sketch of 2009. This has been a crazy, hectic, stressful and exciting year for me and my career... and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Thanks so much to all of you who've been following the blog and leaving comments. Working as much as I do it's easy to feel like I'm stuck in a vacuum. The comments are a great reminder that there are so many great folks out there digging what I'm doing.

Here's the Wikipedia entry on Chamber... in case you are as unfamiliar with him as I was. Poor guy has had a real rough go of it apparently.

In happier news this is POST 800!! That's right, 800!!Woo!!

In even happier news, Batman 80 Page Giant, with a story by Simon Spurrier and myself, is out in stores today (in the US that is. Tomorrow in the UK)!!

This was my first chance to draw for a Bat-book so it could probably go without saying that it was a real thrill for me. The fact that it was a really great story by Simon was icing on the cake:) Go pick up a copy and let me know what you think.

TWO-FACE

Not much to say about this one really... The scarred part of Harvey's face in the drawing was actually scratched off of the bristol board with a razor blade. Oh, and Two-Face is my favorite Batman villain:)

Since I just finished the pencils to Siege: Embedded #2 this morning I'm gonna go take a nap now. See you kids on Monday... if I'm awake by then :P
