Concrete

Here's Paul Chadwick's Concrete! One of the coolest things to ever come out from Dark Horse. It's another one of the early B&W comics I read that really cemented(no pun intended) how I wanted to approach my art stylistically. I may never be the draftsman that Chadwick is by I'll spend the rest of my days trying to get that down-to-earth feeling he has in his work.

Earth Pig

Since I've posted so many superheroes lately I thought I'd break it up a bit some more "indie" stuff. Cerebus here was one of the first B&W comics I read as a kid, and what really gave me a good look at what comics COULD be instead of what I'd gotten so accustomed to (you know four-color fisticuffs). If you've never read any of Dave Sim's 300 issue opus I urge you to seek some of these comics out. I dare you to read Jaka's Story and not cry like a baby!

Cloak & Dagger

Here's my nod to guys like David Lloyd, Frank Miller, Steve Rude and Jim Steranko who are masters of this "invisible line" technique. I couldn't think of a better pair of characters to use this style on than these two. If nothing else Cloak and Dagger definitely have the most complimentary costumes of any superhero I know.

How many aces does he HAVE in a deck?!

Okay so Gambit's one of the Four Horsemen of Apocolypse or whatever now but I'm still a fan of the cajun's old duds. That said I still couldn't help putting a few of my own touches on his classic costume.

This one's for my pal Kevin who used to be the biggest fan of Gambit and Wolverine when we were kids. Kevin's the one who really got me in to reading more Marvel books. I think we swapped Marvel trading cards in study hall too, now that I think about it. Heh, I haven't thought about that in years. I guess doodles are good for something after all. Thanks, Kev!

Doodlebug

Here's a doodle in pretty much the same style I use when I leave notes for my wife. By "style" I mean chubby characters and kind of sloppy ball-point pen lines:) Anyway, swing by Laura's blog Lunchnotes for a chuckle when you've got a minute.

Big Red

Here's a fun sketch of Hellboy I did this morning to warm up. I have no idea where that bug thing came from. I just let my hand do whatever it wanted and this is what fell out. It looks kind of like a mix of the Fly, a Predator and the Brood from X-men now that I take another look at it.
This is all brush pen and a littl bit o' micron here and there, just so ya know.

Done!

Here's the finished product. It turned out okay I guess but I think I should have stuck with the cool blue that I started with instead of adding all the purple. Oh well, live and learn I guess. Every drawing is just a bunch of happy accidents anyway.

Almost There!

I've been kinda busy lately so it's been a few days since the last post...I'll try to be more regular in the future. (Insert bran joke here) This weekend I was a guest at the Comics Expo show in Cape Girardeau, Missouri along with Brian Hurtt and Matt Kindt. We had a lot a fun, did a ton of sketches, and got a chance to talk to a lot of nice folks!
Anyway, I thought it might be kind of cool to see this one in a few steps and build up some suspense. Next post will be the finished product I swear!

Thin Candy Shell

Today Laura bought me the first season of Gargoyles, ain't she great, so I decided to make today's post a doodle of the coolest cartoon to ever come out of Disney. Disney, and there's no talking dogs or sappy love story or any of that junk, just a good old fashioned action cartoon. Who'd a thunk it! It's a shame there's no love for traditional animation anymore since everyone seems to be in favor of the CGI stuff. Here's to the good ol' days, kids.

This was all done with a .08 millennium marker, the same one I use for my panel borders. It's pretty much all a dead line because I was originally planning on coloring it....maybe tomorrow.

Bad spy!

I usually listen to seasons of TV shows while I work on comics at my desk. You'd think it'd be counter productive but I just like to have the background noise. Anyway until a week or so ago I was trying to have an Alias marathon while finishing up my second ish of Q&C but I was afraid if I heard "Rambaldi" one more time I'd freak out and never finish what I was working on. If you've never *seen* Alias I highly recommend it, just not all the seasons in a row:)

Anyway, I thought this could make a neat image in B&W with only her not so super-spy red hair in color. It's not 100% since I think her left hand looks a little wonky and the likeness isn't dead on but I think it's at least blog worthy instead of corner of my studio doodle pile worthy.

Freakhunter

This is Terry, the coolest guy never published. He's the brainchild of my pal Cullen and the first idea CB told me about when we met. Someday (fingers crossed) Terry a.k.a. Freakhunter will hit it big in the funnybooks, until then he'll be popping up on my blog from time to time since he's part of one of the most original concepts ever.

Oh yeah. this is brush pen and Microns, if you're interested.
