5 min: Cain

Since it's Halloween and all, I figured I'd try to post something a little creepier with Cain here. He was sort of the Crypt Keeper type in House of Mystery who introduced the stories... and sometimes even appeared in them.
Have a good Gimme Candy Day, kids.

5 min: Blackhawk

So this was meant to be me riffing on Dan Spiegle's Blackhawk... but ended up looking a bit more like an Eric Wight drawing of Rex Mason.

5 min: Sgt. Rock

And the experiment continues. We've got 5 minute sketches this week, and we kick it off with Sgt. Rock since I've been reading a bunch of old war comics lately.
This one's a little wonky, what with the lop sided brim on his helmet and squat little insignia, but for a little quickie I think it works okay.

From the Files: Supergirl

No... free... time... Must...keep...working...
So here's a Supergirl my pal Ed got from me a while back at a show that I never managed to get up here on the ol' blog 'til now. I think it was done around the same time as this other Supergirl posted here.

Have a great weekend, folks. And be sure to check back next week for 5 minute sketches.

We interrupt your regularly scheduled broadcast...

I forgot to do a ten minute sketch yesterday, so here's something I've been working on a couple minutes at a time for a few weeks now. It's just been sitting next to my desk and whenever I get really frustrated with a comic page I scribbled on this...
It's a bit of a redesign of a character from my favorite two episodes of Wonder Woman "Mind Stealers from Outer Space". It's called the Sardor... and I took more than a few liberties with it's look ,considering it was all just flat black costume and a Darth Vader mask with a few painted silver bits and some glued on chunks of hair, but I think it's still recognizable.
Phil Jimenez actually drew him in a big montage page of Wonder Woman a while back but other than that I don't think he's ever made it into the the actual DCU.
Here's a link ,if you want to scroll down a bit, you can see a few screen caps of what he looked like on show.

10 min: Hellboy

Time ran out way too fast on this one... If I had a few more minutes I'd have added maybe some yellow highlights on his face and coat to give a sense that sunlight is shining through the tree branches above. You kind of get a hint of leaves with the shadows, but you've got to work too hard to figure it out, since I didn't use my time very well here.
Always fun to draw HB though.

10 min: Martian Manhunter

...I dunno. No rant today. I just like J'onn J'onzz is all.

10 min: Jimmy Olsen

Okay, so since we had such a good time last week with 10 minute sketches I've decided to do another week of it. Today I tried a full body sketch, so I didn't have time for color, but I think this turned out pretty well considering.
Jimmy is one of those characters that I think has had a rough time trying to look "cool" with stuff like baggy pants or (ick) the mullet and earring from the nineties, along with a slew of other fashion flops. Don't get me wrong, I like Olsen probably way more than I should but he is kind of a nerd. I think we kind of need to go back to basics a bit though, keep the bow tie and stick to his roots and forget all that other crap. Come on folks Jimmy Olsen started Geek chic, period.

10 min: Nightcrawler

I did my best here to make it so you couldn't see where his forehead meets his hairline...ala Cockrum's take on the "fuzzy elf ".

10 min: Two-Face

I'm really happy with this one. Also, I needed to post something so this didn't look like big nose week here.

10 min: Dick Tracy

In the Dick Tracy movie the prosthetic makeup on all the characters was just amazing... except I think they forgot makeup for one character in particular, since Tracy just looked like a regular guy!
Nothin' against Warren Beatty or anything (and yeah, and I know the actors in the old serials were just normal looking chaps as well) but if you look at those old Chester Gould drawings Tracy was an odd looking guy. Giant crazy lantern jaw, big hawk nose. If it were up to me he'd be a bit more Marv from Sin City than anything else. So yeah, I guess that's where the above ten minute doodle started.

10 min: Penguin

Alright, so it's nowhere near as cool as Shark Week but this'll have to do.
All this week I'll post quick ten minute sketches. Nothin' too fancy, but I've run out of things to post and I really can't take too much time off of my comics work, so I thought these'd be a nice little distraction.
I've done a couple so far and they're actually pretty fun. We'll see if I get sick of 'em of by the end of the week though, or maybe I'll whittle the time down and do 5 minute sketches next week.

MO-KAN:Galactus/Silver Surfer aka Hurtt-Samnee event #2!

Let's end the week on a high note, eh? Here's another con sketch team-up by me and Brian Hurtt.
I did the left side with Galactus while Brian did the right side with the Surfer and the big G's mitt. Probably another of my all time favorite con pieces.
Doesn't Brian do an awesome Silver Surfer?! Reminds me of Buscema's take on ol' Norrin Radd.
Thanks again, Alex and Shane
Have a great weekend, folks.

Q&C?

So... I think the Red Panda trade is out today but I didn't see it at my LCS and it wasn't on the Diamond ship list so I dunno. Drop me a line if you've seen this thing willya?

Have a great weekend, everybody!

Edit: Oh snap! It's Thursday, see ya tomorrow:)

MO-KAN: Magnus Robot Fighter

Hm. Now that I look at this again it kind of reminds me of the last time I drew Magnus. I guess there are only so many ways to draw a guy who karate chops robots though.

MO-KAN: Punisher

Yes, there are people even in the jungle that need to be punished.
Luckily Simon let me draw the 70s Frank Castle since I'm really fond of the white gloves and boots Romita Sr. put him in back in the day, not to mention the widow's peek and sideburns.

MO-KAN: Thanos

Figured we'd start the week off with a bit of class, Thanos throwin' up the shocker. If you don't know what that means I won't be the one to tell ya. You've just gotta go to the Bendis Boards on your own to find out. Thanks again, Simon and Pat!

pre MO-KAN: GLs v Parallax

Before Brian "Falcon" Hurtt and I headed out to the MO-KAN show this past weekend we did a mash-up commission together, of which you can see my breakdowns above, and you can see Brian's finishes here.
We were contacted to collaborate on a commission, but since I have so little spare time of late, we worked it out so I would just do breakdowns and Brian would handle inks and a grey wash.
Brian did a couple of thumbnail sketches as a starting point, I picked the one I liked the best, and jumped into pencilling the thing, tweaking poses and such as I went to make a not-so-subtle "C" shape composition that starts with Kilowog's face and hand, continues through Alan Scott and Kyle Rayner's arms, through to Parallax's cape, up to his hand, twists around his chest-symbol and back out to the GLs... I think.
I drew through all the characters to hopefully make it easier on Brian (even though I think it ended up making it even harder), made a quick scan, and then went back in with all of the costume details, made one final scan and sent it off to B-Rock where he did his magic.
I'm really proud of this piece. Brian and I have worked on things before but we just split chores on characters and it was like each of us had drawn in our respective styles on either side of the paper. With this it was wild to see our styles mix with one another. My poses with the Big Hurtt's inking...it's like a whole new animal. Easily one of my favorite commission pieces I've worked on, and I barely did any of the heavy lifting :)
Be sure to check Brian's blog so you can get the full effect of this senses shattering blog crossover event, okay?

MO-KAN: Kingpin

I couldn't think of a better follow up to yesterday's Daredevil than a sketch of Kingpin... so here ya go, a sketch of Kingpin...doing his best Lex Luthor impersonation.

MO-KAN: Daredevil

I kind of like how this turned out. It's pretty close to what I had in my head, which doesn't happen nearly as much as I'd like.

MO-KAN: Moon Knight

I've never drawn Moon Knight before this, but I think this turned out pretty well, even if I had to dig through some quarter bins for reference... and ask everybody around if he could fly or not. Wow, there's a few points off of my geek cred, huh?

MO-KAN: Future Crocker

Okay so I'm back from KC ,and it's time to play a bit of catch-up with the funnybooks so I'll keep this short, BIG thanks to everyone who took the time to come by and chat or pick up a sketch. You folks are just great! Couldn't do this stuff withoutcha:)

Now without further ado, here's my first scan from the show.

It's Paul Crocker from Q&C set 20 years in the future. Brian "Falcon" Hurtt also did a companion piece in the same sketchbook set 20 years in the past posted 10/2/07.

Thanks again for the scan, Alex!
