Iron Man

Been reading Essential Iron Man Vol. 1 and wanted to take a crack at his old costume. Don Heck is a friggin' genius - this is such an awesome costume!

Edit: I've been schooled by comics legend Phil Hester that this costume was in fact designed by Steve Ditko. Still, Don Heck is a genius and this is an awesome costume! :)

You know, Heck gets a lot of guff from people for not really selling the superhero action stuff, but all the real looking people are Beautiful! Truly incredible work of a perhaps mismanaged talent.

What I like here in particular, Chris, is the freedom you've used with dry brush. Not just for the smoke, but even on areas of the armor. Usually inkers look for a sleek wet mark to describe the armor but here you keep an atmosphere to the whole image that suggests we're seeing the spot blacks "through the smoke.'

That's a talented inker Don Heck could've used from Marvel back in the day!

You know Heck, who had a great reputation, was drawing greeting cards before this, right?

This blog just gets cooler and cooler - Heck is a genius. They should do a book on him (if they haven't already).

Not really sure what the feedback (if any) has been about your approach at making superheroes less muscular than what the norm is in current comics. I for one really dig it and think this style is an Iron Man comic I'd love to read.
