My editor asked me to put a new cover together for this collection. I was aiming for something iconic that conveyed the tone of the book. Below is the process.
First a couple pages of very loose sketches.
Then I like to turn the ideas in my sketches into several distinct options for my editor to choose from. In this case none of my options were really singing - so I combined a few ideas for a final rough to show editorial.
This was the final rough idea I sent and was approved, very enthusiastically!
Pencils stage.
Inks.
And then Matt Wilson did his color magic to it!

Awesome sauce! I'm loving the book and am glad to hear about the sell-out of issues 1-2.
That's super cool of them to get behind it like that. I've been buying the book as it's been coming out and it's seriously one of my favorite things each month. #3 in particular was just fantastic, I've never particularly liked Giantman and Wasp all that much before then.
Love that final piece, Chris! Great motion in the bodies, fantastic expression on Thor's face and that is some ace hammer-swingin' action!
Big ups to Matt on the colors as well--those clouds are super purty.
Thanks for sharing all those prelims. You gave us more than our daily recommended allowance today.
Congratulations for the success of Thor:TMA. Th creative team has brought new excitement that the character hasn't seen since Walter Simonson was at the helm. Here's to continued success.
By the way, Chris, you are totally new to me. You get my vote for my favorite new artist of 2010.
Keep up the good work. I'll be watching!
I loves me some process. Great work. Facial expressions priceless as always
Congratulations!
I've written a brief note about the special for a spanish web devoted to Marvel Comics, you can see it here:

Can I ask how exactly you get from pencils to inks? You always use negative space so beautifully-do you simply use an overlay of some type? Just wondering.
Terrific, as always.
I love the timeless feel to these.
Always love the process-porn. Thanks man, and congrats on the sales!
Thanks everyone! I appreciate all the nice comments!
Pastrami - Not quite sure how to answer your question. I have no idea what you mean by "overlay". I just ink my pencils - nothing fancy - just a brush pen. I just always know where to spot the blacks in my head. Does that help at all?
That does help, Chris, thanks!
I suppose my question would have been clearer if I simply asked whether you ink directly onto the pencils.
I was thinking that you might cover the pencils with a clear piece of acetate or something...
Thanks for posting the process Chris. I was actually looking at your site a while ago thinking I wish you'd post more of the pencil work you do. Great to see.
excelente!!!
