Hurley Con: Marquis

This was another pre-ordered sketch. I'd never actually tried to draw Guy Davis's Marquis before so after my first attempt (the top one), of which I wasn't particularly proud of, I took another stab at it (the bottom). I think the second attempt definitely helped get a few kinks out.
I ended up bringing both to the show and letting the gent who commissioned it pick which of the two he preferred. He even picked the one I preferred! Goodonya, Doug:)

I actually like the stark dramatic lighting in the first one, but maybe the character isn't represented as iconically as in the second one: That's a great pose with great blacks, and the smoke cutting across behind in a lovely compositional touch.

While I love the composition of the first piece, I agree that the deep shadows tend to mask the more quintessential features of the Marquis' costume, especially his exaggerated (and sinister) nose [Although that Lovecraftian-looking nasty that he's battling is sublime]. The second piece is SO pitch-perfect, however, that it seems as though you learne exactly what you needed to do from the first attempt in order to distill the essence of the Marquis down to a single uncomplicated visual. I agree with Alan that you used that billowy smoke to its greatest effect. It's truly a provocative piece. Great inspiration and suggestion, Doug, and unreal execution, Chris.

Love the beastie in the first one, but agree the second one really captures the Marquis. Amazing stuff Chris!

Dig 'em both, but the second a bit more!

I really liked both of them, but the "someone just stumbled upon what I've been doing look" of the second really caught my eye. It's currently framed and hanging above my PC. Thanks again Chris!
